I'm very optimistic right now.... even though it's not over yet, and how this all ends is unknown at this time. The Epstein stuff is a major blow, but it's not even that, but Mamdani's election as Mayor of New York City. That's the exclamation point, a turning point, the climax of the story (speaking in Freytagian terms). New York City was a hotbed for Islamophobia in the early 2000s after the September 11th attacks. That was probably the beginning of this movement away from democracy, and toward more authoritarian rule in the US, and then about 2015 we saw a sharp shift in the culture to something darker. I see a big cultural change occurring right now, and it's pleasing to see how Americans are fighting like hell for democracy and human decency. |
While it does feel like the end of the Trump era is finally on the horizon, I'm not breathing easy until Dems take back the House in '26 and the White House in '28. Even then we'll still need to unfuck this disaster of a Supreme Court, rebuild institutions like the Department of Education, defund ICE, rebuild guard rails, etc. This damage will take decades to repair and a lot can still go wrong in the meantime.
