Just Finished: Siren: Blood Curse (PS+ Premium)

My horror game October playthrough for Halloween. For some reason I always thought this game was an HD remake of some sort for one of the previous Siren games. Turns out it is more like a reboot and its own distinct entry. This is the first and likely only Siren game I will ever play. The game was originally released in 12 episodes and while I think it was a novel experiment at the time I can't see why anyone would ever purchase it and play it that way. The first chapter is ass and why would you pick out a random chapter to play without experiencing the ones that came before. This game is fugly. It came out in 2008 after the first Uncharted. I know Japan Studio never got the budget of Naughty Dog but this is inexcusable on the PS3. It looks worse than the original SD version of Resident Evil 4. Gameplay wise it reminds me of the old school Resident Evil games, if they were actually set in Japan. The cramped spaces, locked doors, slow zombies, and sucky controls all make this evoke that classic RE charm. The sightjacking gimmick sucks to use because it is so finnicky. The one thing the game has going for it is that it is really scary and the atmosphere is amazing with the abandoned Japanese village offering many scary locales to get lost in. Too bad they are reused so often. I like how the game let's you use so many different objects as a weapon from street signs to videocameras, it is very satisfying to beat down zombies with whatever you can find nearby. The shooting controls suck. The story is all over the place. While horrible things happen to the characters they are stuck in a loop so their grisly deaths don't amount to much the first time around. The white people are the main characters with the two white dudes being the ones who survive until the end. The voice acting is horrible in both English and Japaneses. To be fair a white woman is also the main villain. The little girl was annoying to play as or escort. They make generic white guy teenager Howard the hero and all he seems to want is some Japanese poon. I was going to recommend Sony make a movie out of this franchise but it turns out they already did in Japan in the 2000s. I don't see that there is must life left in this franchise then. Maybe that is for the best.
