The original Bubsy was just some generic Sonic knock-off. I was there. They were common back in the early-to-mid '90s. I find it kinda cute that this particular half-assed corporate cash-in franchise apparently struck a chord with someone and found a niche base of diehard super-fans who somehow find it novel and special in some way despite its many glaring design flaws and shortcomings and have continued to hype it and swear by it for generations now.
I'm happy that they're the ones making this game. So I think I'm in the same camp as the OP. I haven't played the demo, but will likely get the full game. It wouldn't exactly take much for this to be the greatest Bubsy game ever made and it very much looks like it's being made with a lot of love (it actually looks like it has an independent identity) and I love that.
It looks like fun!
