Not sure why everything has to be some crazy complicated solution.
DS/3DS emulation is simple enough with the system positioned vertically, the Switch 2 kickstand even is designed for this which a pretty big tell right there.
They could make a controller or Joycon clip-on to the side of the system in vertical mode if they want.
