Sadly I think both Yotei and Saros will not be selling great. Had hopes for Yotei as Tsushima was a 10M+ seller, but as soon as they announced a female protagonist the hate Yotei is getting is shamefull, plus the whole dev firing drama right before the game launch. I'm still hoping for 7M+ sales figure but I'm not even confident at it hitting even 5M anymore. |
I get completely what you are saying but I had that in mind and that's why I think their budget is important because it gives them room for error.
In the case of Yotei they already have expectations from Sony because Tsushima was a success and yes they are facing a difficult situation when it comes to pr but I can't but think about HorizonFW. HorizonFW faced bad pr, not as bad but still and it made money but it didn't outsell ZD. They added FW to PS+ just one year after release and the logic of that move was pretty clear, they didn't like the expected number of Burning Shores sales so they added FW a couple months before BS release to boost sales. We don't know if it worked or not but we do know that even when it was pretty clear FW didn't meet expectations the studio was intact and they actually grew to take more work. Tsushima sold 2.5 million in 3 days, if Yotei can sell half of that it would be enough to start making money, as bad as the situation looks I personally don't think they are only going to sell 1 million and that is why I do think they are safe. The investment will be good because the budget wasn't crazy, the media and sales insiders will say and say things the same way they talked about FW but I only care about good games and safe developers lol.
SAROS of the other hand has an "easier" path. Returnal sold 500K in its release window and it was thanks to a combination of reasons like ps5 shortage, the game being too hard, the price was pretty new and yes Selene also made a lot of people reject the game. 500k was enough for Sony to declare the game a success, acquire Housemarque and give them a brand new office. SAROS won't have to face those problems, they even confirmed the difficulty will be managed differently. SAROS needs to sell double what Returnal did to start making money and tbh that doesn't sound too crazy, I think it's going to enter the Ratchet/Astro first quarter sales category (1.5M+) and if that happens it would be excellent news.

Both can exist. The reality is that we wouldn't get games like TloU2 or Intergalactic without higher budgets. Whether they're disproportionate to what the game offers and how it sells is another issue entirely, and appears to be what people should be focucsed on when talking about budgets. |
Yeah I know there are experiences that need that budget it's just that the 300M it's still unreal for me. I still see from time to time the classic "Spider-Man 2 barely made any money" when in reality it started making money after 2 weeks but it's also reality that it will always be 200M behind the first one because it costed 3 times more. If Venom stays a stand alone that reuses SP2 work it will help me finally accept those 300M LOL.
