Similar for RE where the latest mainline games weren't on the systems most Japanese owned, leading to them not having as much of a nostalgic attachment to the series.

I guess the question is why? Whereas in the West people has both a DS and PS3/360

Once the price came down, why was the home consoles so unwanted. My suspicion is software didn't have the selling power 

I feel like part of it was that starting in the 7th gen AAA console games became much more Westernized in their style, whereas the kind of games that were popular on PS1/PS2 in Japan like traditional JRPGs mostly moved to portables, so the audience followed.
