The thing is, competition breeds variety and quality. We won't have as much variety with only one console maker left.

Competition can still breed variety and quality in software despite having a dedicated physical medium piece.

The only thing you wont have variety on is what piece of physical hardware you'll have on your desk or table which shouldnt affect the quality or variety of video games in the first place - that depends on the people who are making them and how they make them.

And to say there being only one console maker there wont be much variety doesnt make sense, I guess you havent seen or been part of the PC gaming scene in the last 15 years - technically you cant call it the "PC gaming scene" anymore since all the platform makers pretty much almost all have all of the third party games from PC with more coming as time goes by. Companies that used to be stingy in the past (i.e. like SEGA with Yakuza for an example) dont exist as much anymore. Its just mainly Vanillaware and a few other smaller companies lol.

Genres that use to be PC centric like Visual Novels and RTS/Strategy games are releasing outside of the PC Platform which is a win for everyone imo.
