PC will remain much more expensive. But gamers are becoming less sensitive to high prices, and most will be buying PC's that are weaker than PS6 until the end of its generation. "High specs" aren't all that important anymore. A Series S style Playstation might actually be needed this time around, knowing Switch 2 exists and a portable Playstation may be in the works. |
If some things don't change, gaming and non gaming related, I don't see how SNY get's away with just a $599 or higher PS6 next gen. Even if it were to launch holiday 2029, that would still be a tough pill to swallow for many, so I'd expect a more PS3 like launch and generation.
In this case, I would agree, an XB Series approach would be the way to go. 3 SKU's if they're going to do a handheld (hybrid). Having only 2 SKU's, the cheaper being a dockable handheld, isn't going to cut it, if the console is $599 or more.
I'd guess a $499 handheld would be most likely at this point, but then you'd need another $499 console (an updated PS5 Pro), and then a $599 or higher model.
The only thing I can think of that would allow SNY to get away with a single console in this case, would be a pretty substantial subsidy, which would seem really unlikely at this point, but with XB losing more and more ground in the hardware space, maybe just maybe SNY would be more open to taking a bit more of a risk again perhaps, due to lack of competition.
As a side note, personally, in retrospect, I really think the PS5 should've been 8TF and $399. I kinda think that might have actually been the initial plan before something changed, whatever it was for whatever reason. PS4 is basically 2TF, PS4 Pro is basically 4TF, PS5 should've been 8TF, and PS5 Pro is basically 16TF. The PS5 being basically 10TF doesn't fit near as nicely, and leads us to where we are today.
PS1 - ! - We must build a console that can alert our enemies.
PS2 - @- We must build a console that offers online living room gaming.
PS3 - #- We must build a console that’s powerful, social, costs and does everything.
PS4 - $- We must build a console that’s affordable, charges for services, and pumps out exclusives.
PRO -%-We must build a console that's VR ready, checkerboard upscales, and sells but a fraction of the money printer.
PS5 - ^ -We must build a console that’s a generational cross product, with RT lighting, and price hiking.
PRO -&- We must build a console that Super Res upscales and continues the cost increases.
