Pokemon is an IP with a very high kids and teenage userbase. Those people don't have huge disposable income to buy system quickly like working adults
The reason why this game is cross gen instead of next gen exclusive is because not everyone can get a copy of Switch 2 to play this game
I agree with a next mainline game coming in 2026. I think Nintendo expect this next mainline game to be released with a userbase closer to 35 million consoles
X&Y sold 4 million+ at launch with a 35 million userbase. Nintendo is targeting something similar here I think
