What Trump and his administration believe is that tariffs are taxes on foreign countries, so high tariffs will send a lot of money into the United States.
But tariffs are paid by American companies at the point of entry in the US and then these additional costs are passed on to American consumers. So what tariffs actually do is a redistribution of wealth within the USA, from the average Americans to the rich Americans because the average American will pay higher taxes while the rich receive tax cuts. This redistribution means that the average American can afford fewer goods which will result in lower sales, which in turn hurts the American economy.
It's a story of the collective stupidity of the USA that voted an idiot to become their president. The stupidity extends to the Republican party who has handed over their power in congress to the stupid president. It's a story of lemmings running towards the cliff while celebrating themselves for how smart they are.
