| Zippy6 said: Will it be a problem this generation too? Judging by the sales of the Switch I don't think it was really a problem last generation. The Switch 2 will almost certainly be hacked like the previous Nintendo consoles. DS, Wii, 3DS, WiiU and Switch have all been exploitable with soft mods and/or flash carts and I don't see that trend being broken. Though emulation probably won't get into a good state for playing till roughly 3 years after launch. I imagine Switch 2 piracy will be a thing by early 2027. |
Yes it's hard to know if lack of emulation would have increased or even decreased sales. Maybe the fact so many were playing emulated games made Switch games more popular and talked about and kept them relevant to consumers. I'm sure Nintendo are convinced emulation damaged their sales but maybe that isn't true.
Emulation is slightly different to running pirate games on original console hardware. I think its fair to say the Dreamcast had an early death due to piracy being so easy. I've no idea how easy it is to run pirate games on a actual Nintendo Switch.
