Bill Gates was originally sold on the idea of Windows on a console, which was partially true, but they couldn’t implement Windows in a way that would work on console, but they settled on over the counter PC parts and an SDK that allowed developers to develop for Xbox as if they were developing for PC. Looks like Xbox may finally be realizing that original vision very soon. |
This approach allows Microsoft to enhance their hardware appeal and continues with their device-agnostic strategy. People are thinking what they could do next, and a Windows powered console and handheld combo next gen sounds like the perfect move.
It's an approach similar to what Valve attempted with the Steam Machines, but is now succeeding with the Steam Deck's SteamOS.
