Well done Donald Trump for helping to blow Canada's Conservatives 25 point lead only a few months ago into a Liberal minority. I actually think a Liberal minority with NDP in coalition is the best case scenario, I wish Labour in the UK were forced to make a coalition with the Lib Dems instead of their outright majority because I feel the current Lib Dems are more left wing than Starmer. In other hilarious news, Pierre Poilievre lost his 20+ year seat. |
A Liberal minority, but a de facto majority since (from my understanding) the Bloc Québécois generally don't show up when the issues covered in the House of Commons don't pertain to Quebec. So subtract their 11.5 seats from 172, and that line moves back to 161 for the de facto majority... most days! They have a few slippery floor tiles to walk around, they just have to make sure they don't piss off both the BQ and NDP.
My personal opinion - being someone who is on the far left, economically speaking - NDP is actually closer to my values in that regard. I'm a big UBI guy, and I also believe strongly in investing in automation and any infrastructure that allows for the artisanal industry to thrive... although, Greens are more the UBI party, not NDP. The Greens need to do a lot better in Canada.
Careny's an egghead, so I'm quite happy that he's at the helm, rather than someone who is more or less just branding. We'll see what happens. And I'll be voting for the first time in Canada in the next election.
