Imagine this scenario. You're a Kyoto-based gaming corporation coming off of a massive success with your home/portable hybrid console with detachable controllers. A lot of hype is surrounding it's successor and so far everything is going well. The hardware is impressive, the games are impressive, even the price of the system is fairly affordable given the power. Everything is going well so far... Except for one problem. The biggest launch title you have, a Kart racer staring an Italian plumber, costs $80. And people don't find out about this until after your big presentation.

Original Switch + Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in 2017 = $359.98 ($299.99 + $59.99), adjusted for inflation $468.60

Switch 2 + Mario Kart World in 2025 = $499.99

And if you also want a wireless Pro controller for docked play (also allowing up to 3 local players in Mario Kart), you can get a compatible Switch 1 Pro controller for 35 - 50 bucks (either a new third party Pro controller or a used Nintendo original Switch 1 Pro controller).

You hadn't that option in 2017, the Wii U Pro controller wasn't compatible, so your only option was a new Nintendo Switch 1 Pro controller for $69.99

Original Switch + Mario Kart 8 Deluxe + Switch 1 Pro controller in 2017 = $429.97 ($299.99 + $59.99 + $69.99), adjusted for inflation $559.71

Switch 2 + Mario Kart World in 2025 = $535 - $550
