Trump has now told Trudeau that the border as defined by the 1908 treaty is invalid and he is considering redrawing it. The main target of this seems to be an attempt to bring the Great Lakes entirely under American control. All of them except Lake Michigan are shared between the U.S. and Ontario.

His justification is that the treaty is between the U.S. and the UK, not the U.S. and Canada. Canada was a British dominion in 1908.
