Musks "Roman Salute" didn't help either, which has historically been tied to fascism. (Not calling it the Nazi salute, probably not Musks intention during the heat of the moment, benefit of a doubt and all that.)

The “Roman salute” was also employed by Benito Mussolini, who wanted to restore Italy to the glory of the Roman days through fascism.

The First Reich was the Holy Roman Empire, which was dominated by the Germans and whose mostly Germanic rulers claimed to receive their power from the line of Roman emperors. 

Musk’s excuse doesn’t wash.
