The time has come mortals to list the top 5 games of my life. Lo and behold!
#5 Half-Life 2/Black Mesa
There were many candidates for this number 5 spot of my life, StarCraft II, World of Warcraft, Persona 5, but in the end, it went to Half-Life 2 (or rather the Half-Life series) because it’s something I’ve been playing since late childhood and still love today. It’s just a damn polished series from start to finish, even more so if you throw in the remake of the first, Black Mesa, and it’s one of the best examples of a guided experience done right, that also manage to stay compelling on multiple playthroughts. |
#4 The Withcer 3: Wild Hunt
The Witcher 3 is the newest game to make the honors of being one of the top 5 of my life. I was even a little late to it so it’s only roughly 8 years since I first booted it up. But from that moment I was sold, it’s just the most immersed I’ve been in an open-world RPG ever and I feel what really makes it stick out is that every quest, no matter how little, feels like it got all the attention it derserved, there’s no real filler here and Geralt is always at his best with the snappy remarks. |
#3 Portal 2
Masterpiece plain and simple, Portal 2 is not only among the funniest games in terms of writing it’s also an extremely well-designed puzzler that builds upon the first in interesting ways. I’ve played it many, many times and it still remains a blast to playthrough today and a source of infinite great quotes. For now, all that’s left is to break out the confetti. You know, the good stuff. |
#2 Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos
Does anybody else have a game they hate ranked higher than 2? Okay so not really, but it’s hard not to be damn tired of how the game is treated these days, at how it had to be the only of Blizzard’s remasters to turn into a complete shitshow. But putting that aside… I do love this game. It’s epic world, it’s campaign and characters, and the community that keeps making awesome custom maps to this day. It’s probably my most played game this last year as it has been every year for a long time and I don’t see that changing anytime soon, so obviously flaws or not, this is easily one of the best games of my life. |
#1 Tales of Symphonia
Had to include both original and collector's edition because to me this is still a GameCube game first and foremost. This game is my Ghibli; my Last Airbender. Tales of Symphonia quite simply has that special magic that makes something greater than the sum of its part, greater than just a piece of fiction. That makes you feel for the characters like real people and makes it feel nostalgic even when you’re playing it for the first time. Simply put it feels like home, and aged gameplay or not I’m sure I’ll keep enjoying this epic journey whenever I choose to go on it, no matter how far in the future. ...Wait a minute, who's that handsome devil on the back? |
