48. VVVVVV (3DS/PC)
VVVVVV is a platformer game where, instead of jumping, you flip gravity back and forth between pulling towards the top or bottom of the screen. In a way, the game is pretty barebones. Sure, there is a world to explore, but no attack options, no power ups, and no real enemies besides the thousands of deadly spikes littering the world.
Instead, what VVVVVV does is uses its new premise to create a set of new platforming conventions. Players will learn to fluently bounce between collapsing platforms, weave between objects flying in opposite directions, preserve their momentum as they rush through autoscroller sections. All of this is built on a foundation of intuitive mechanics, clear level design, Veni Vidi Vici, and a generous number of checkpoints.
Also, the soundtrack is a cult classic.
