Any longer? The first JRPGs by the given definition were Wizardry and Ultima, both games that Dragon Quest took clearly notes from. JRPGs were born in the west!

Fair enough I don't know enough about those to say if I'd consider them JRPGs, but it's true DQ didn't come from nowhere and borrowed a lot from western RPGs on and off the screen.

Edit: Essentially, in the RPG "genre-tree" JRPGs probably sprung from the trunk like anything else but grew to be a major branch of their own that's pretty easily distinguisable from other subgenres. I'd say it's as sizeable and distinctive as many other commonly acknowledged genres.
