They do. But you have to do a long rest whenever you want to switch members which can be a bit of a hassle, as we as well as inventory and equipment management for that many characters.

You don't have to do a long rest to switch party members. 

Technically yes, but there's generally no reason not to long rest when you've already gone back to camp (which you do have to). In any case it's mostly the going back to camp part that's the hassle.
