I think the problem with the major studios isn't the graphics per se, but the massively ambitious titles they continue to insist on producing. It seems like the industry is still desperate to prove itself to other media, and in that desperation keeps trying to one-up itself (no pun intended) to keep making the most grand and epic adventures ever seen (when they're not flooding the market with live service titles because they need to squeeze people for every dime to make up for their ever-bloating costs). But not every game needs to be some colossal open-world experience with 100+ hours of gameplay or whatever. I wouldn't mind great graphics with all the bells & whistles being put into a game that I can reasonably beat in well under 10 hours. We need more shorter "AA" games, and the industry doesn't need to leave that up to indie devs or re-releases of retro titles. And there's a market for those games. Capcom's best-selling game ever is a remake of a survival horror game released in 1998 that takes only 8-9 hours to clear. Bring back shmups. Put these shorter games out for $40 a pop and they'd sell like hotcakes, and on a lower budget to boot.
