Those are some pretty dire PS5 sales, I guess increasing the price discourages people from buying things. Who knew?

Well, it's all a game of revenue. They might have gone from a $50 loss to a $40 profit per unit, so that's a $1.65 million net swing for the better even assuming the baseline went from 25,000 to 10,000.

Of course, long-term damage to the brand and all.

I think it's more or less a damned-if-you-do-damned-if-you-don't scenario. The Yen has suffered massive blows to its valuation, and home consoles have sold poorly in Japan for a long time now. Long-term brand damage is my main point, though, as you guessed. With the Pro pricing news all over the place, Sony are getting a pretty bad reputation, which isn't exactly smart if they want positive momentum going into the next generation. Constantly announcing a slew of remakes doesn't exactly help either (both Horizon: Zero Dawn and Days Gone looks to be getting their own soon). I have no idea what their long-term plan is, I really don't. I haven't see them garner this much negative attention since the release window of the PS3.
