I think almost all games that tell stories do that to some degree, but if I have to point out some in particular:

• Tales of Symphonia and Xillia 2
• A Short Hike
• Persona 3 and 5
• Ori
• OMORI
• God of War 2018
• A lot of Zelda games
• Subspace Emissary in Brawl (yes really)

Subspace Emissary is the best Single Player experience on a fighting game that I ever experienced. Agreed.

I would say The Walking Dead Season 1 from Telltale. This game is amazing. Too bad in Season 2 they tried to make the player cry every 5 minutes, but it become way too annoying. So yeah, Season 1 was much better.

Advanced V.G. has quite a sad story mode, since...

Yuka suffers almost the whole story, even after the final boss. I know in Advanced V.G.2 she kinda overcomes that with the help of her new friend, but that doesn't make AVG1 story less sad.
