Just Finished: Resistance: Retribution (PS5)

I was a big fan of both the PSP and the Resistance franchise so it is a bit baffling that I never played Resistance Retribution on the PSP. Oh well, better late than never. I appreciate that Bend and Sony included this game as part of the PS Plus Premium Classics collection, which is how I played it. The game plays well with dual analog controls, which just goes to show that the PSP should have had been designed with 2 analog nubs to begin with. Out of all of the games, Retribution feels the most like a true sequel to the original Resistance Fall of Man, even though it follows a different protagonist. It always felt lame how the series abandoned its cool European setting for its generic American one. This portable game probably has the biggest geographic scope, taking place in France, Germany, Netherlands, and even Luxembourg. Obviously the graphics are limited by the PSP's capabilities but the art direction is strong and translates surprisingly well. James Grayson is given more personality that Nathan Hale, but is a surly one. The campaign is pretty lengthy and comprehensive. The most important part is that the weapons are fun to use, even the one slightly modified from their original incarnations. The Auger was always fun but it took a while for the Razor to grow on me but damn was it satisfying to use once you learned how to use it properly. Some of the enemies are overly annoying to fight and the controls and level design get wonky at times. Bend added trophies to the game, which definitely helped motivate me to see it through to the end. You pretty much just have to clear the campaign to earn the Platinum trophy. Only my second platinum trophy ever. So that counts for something. Now the only Resistance game I have not played is the critically reviled and Vita exclusive Resistance Burning Skies.
