Hardware and software sales were better for Wii + DS, but the WiiU and 3DS can still play those games, and even give them a higher quality, 1080i.

Sure, if you look at it like that.

But if you look at it from the point of view of when it happened, there is a reason why Wii + DS sold 255+ millions, and WiiU + 3DS not even 90.

Yeah I can't speak for the DS as I never owned one, but the Wii was a much, much better console than the Wii U. Its library was stronger and the Wiimote was a more compelling controller.
