From a cultural importance and for the phenomenon it was, Pokemon GO is the objective GOTY. But it goes against so many metrics of what people usually consider GOTY lol.
Anywoo, mine that year was ... Kirby: Planet Robobot. It's the pinnacle of 2D Kirby modern design, having one of the best rosters of abilities, an excellent techno/sci-fi aesthetics, soundtrack that sounds like any other in the series.
I know today people would want to direct people to The Forgotten Land first as it's 3D but Planet Robobot is the better Kirby experience personally.
Honestly, I consider it on the same pedestal of the 2D platformer genre as Super Mario 3, World, DKC 2/Tropical Freeze.
Kinda sad it got released such in a low key manner by Nintendo at the time towards the end years of the 3DS.
