PS2 era Naugthy Dog is unexplored territory for me. Which is strange because Jak and Daxter always seemed like the type of game I would enjoy, heck I definitely owned it at some point but this was my first serious attempt to complete it. Turns out my instincts were correct as I think the game is great. Sad as I was to see Naughty Dog abandon Crash after the excellent PS1 games, Jak and Daxter in many ways feels like a natural evolution of their work on that previous franchise. Instead of linear pseudo 3D platforming levels, here we have a fully realized and nearly seamless 3D sandbox to play in. The game was apparently a technical marvel at the time. The world is colorful and engaging. Daxter is a great original character, Jak was still a silent protagonist and not given much a personality in this game. The gameplay and control are enjoyable and easy to get the hang of. The game owes a lot to Super Mario 64. The one downside is that many of the goals to collect the power spheres comes down to collecting a certain number of different collectibles sprawled throughout the world. I attained 80 of the game's 101 spheres before conquering the final boss. I played the excellent Daxter on the PSP way back in the day, and even though that was a different studio, it felt good to experience the true origins of the franchise at last. I will get to the later 2 games at some point. Though apparently things take a dark and edgier turn. Will see if that is for the better or worse.
Score: 8/10
