Well this was an interesting read: https://www.forbes.com/sites/conormurray/2023/07/21/barbie-largely-praised-for-feminist-themes-but-draws-anger-from-the-anti-woke/?sh=fd6adf758bdd
From woke to communist lol. Honestly barbie is a fricken toy doll, who has 1000s of appearances in the collection. Not sure what they expected from it. Was never going to be a mind blowing drama that keeps you on the edge of your seat trying to solve the mystery. The issue is society in general complains about everything these days, I don't think it's just a race trojan. Look at the Brendon Frasier Oscar winning performance. People complained he has a fat suit. I was just happy he finally got mentally better in his life that he was up to make another movie again. To be honest post COVID people have just become even bigger assholes (think of any word stronger you want here that describes it), especially online behind a keyboard towards others. Atheists and media attacking religious people for their beliefs, except Islam as they fear being beheaded or blown up. Anti Vaxxers attacking people's families who had loved ones die during COVID. Environmentalists being distractive to private property or gluing themselves to road to fuck up everyone's work day. People that don't want to work attacking people that work saying they are too rich and want handouts. The whole world has gone mad in general with everything In terms of Movies/TV, Chrkeller and Mnementh touched on the issue already and explained it well. Here are two examples that demonstrate this well. Charmed reboot, about witches, fantasy show, but straight into politics with the metoo movement. Why did they need to go there basically in the first few episodes when the show is about witches and magic and we are yet to learn who these people are. The Rookie, establishes itself first, well written, then every now and then they add a political agenda that reflects the real world, like police brutality, racism etc. They write it in such a way that is part of the show, not just slap a black and white verdict on it. They make you think about the topic. |
It's a trojan, because as I've explained, in similar circumstances this is something that consistently happens. That is why I brought up Barbie as an example, but there are others, i.e. She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel, Captain Marvel, the Eternals, etc. This frequently happens with major female lead projects, regardless of whether or not they have replaced a male character or whatever. And, there are plenty of changes they could make that draw no objections, such as changing height, age, body type, back story, hair color, eye color, etc. So, you got to cut through the bullshit. They object when a character's gender/race/sexual orientation is changed. But other changes are fine and dandy. And they frequently object to characters with those kinds of leads even if there was no change taken place (i.e. Barbie, She-Hulk, Marvel, Ms. Marvel, Eternals, Jon Kent, etc.) When you look at the pattern, it becomes pretty clear that the change is not the issue. On the other hand, people have consistently had issues with fat suits being used, and the people criticizing that seem to really only have an issue in that particular circumstance. I think they are wrong to criticize here as it was not used in a demeaning way, and it would be morally irresponsible to incentivize an actor to intentionally remain morbidly obese for any period of time, but I think their concern was pretty genuine. If they weren't objecting honestly to the fat suit, what was their issue? |
