Just Finished: My Japanese Coach (DS)

I picked up this game as an impulse buy at a used game store. It is a game that teaches English speakers the basics of Japanese. I would probably loved a game like this back when I first started studying Japanese. Not sure how much it would have helped but it would have at least added some variety to my study methods. Now I am fairly advanced in Japanese, so this is more like a refresher and something I played for the novelty. I use Duolingo and have to say that even that is more fun and beneficial than this game. The visual presentation is pretty bland. I have to admit I did learn some stuff and there is cool trivia about Japan included in the lessons. The DS seems like it would be the ideal tool to practice writing kanji with the stylus and touchscreen but kanji is too intricate for the screen and the game is not always accurate in assessing your drawing. Most of the minigames are more tedious than fun and they get old and repetitive fast. I mostly stick to the Multiple Choice, Flash Cards, and Spelling minigames when I have a choice. The game features over 1,000 lessons but the specifically curated lessons top out at Lesson 100. I recently passed that mark and figured I shouldn't wait until I complete all 1,000+ lessons to put my thoughts down about this game. I don't really recommend but I'll keep playing in short bursts until I get sick of it or pass my next Japanese test. I don't regret buying this game but I can't really recommend it either.
