So I'm gonna try to actually write a bit about my choices this year in groups of 5, particularly since many of these games will probably be pushed out next year with games like Ragnarök, Tears of the Kingdom etc. coming for their spots. Anyways here's the first batch:

The Beginner’s Guide

I think I expected something very different going into this game years ago, but what I got what a very unique and very compelling narrative that’s probably still among my favorite stories in games. There is still a little bit of the humor we know and love from the Stanley Parable, but mainly tells a more serious story, though it also still manages to surprise and intrigue in the weirdness of the many smaller games it is comprised of.

The Talos Principle

Well-crafted puzzle game with great stories on top is something I wish there were more of, but The Talos Principle certainly fits the bill. It’s rare to see a game get as explicitly philosophical as The Talos Principle, probably because it can easily end up feeling a bit cliché, but The Talos Principle doesn’t fall into that trap imo and tackles things in a legitimacy interesting way. It also had a great DLC, Road to Gehenna, with a completely separate yet just as interesting story and tougher puzzles (perhaps sometimes to the extent of being a little too perplexing, at least if you go for 100 %).

Super Meat Boy

I enjoy difficult games, but am generally less fond of punishing games with big negative consequences to failing. GAME OVER after running out of lives and the like. Super Meat Boy is therefore a perfect fit for me as an incredibly difficult game where the action never stops even if you fail and the setbacks are usually small because the levels are short. It challenges you significantly on precision and timing, but with little punishment for failing that's exactly what makes it enjoyable. The one exception to this is of course the bonus levels which do give you limited tries and which I’m less fond off for that reason. I also kind of wish the collectible bandages were more so difficult to get than difficult to find, but these are minor complaints in the big picture.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

Rising, O, Rising. What a game. It’s definitely not Platinum’s most refined and polished title, but I love it nonetheless. The combat itself is excellent and Raiden is probably my favorite MGS character, so already there you know I’m gonna like it. Then there’s the story which, well, is definitely silly at times and far from the best in the Metal Gear series, but which I still find quite compelling as a whole. It’s a game that definitely has flaws and which proably didn't live up to its full potential, but I still like it a lot as is.

NEW

DOOM (2016)

Like Rising before DOOM is first of all on this list for excellent gameplay. It’s a great shooter which gives you a really nice arsenal of weapons, but on top of that it also gives you plenty of things to unlock, challenges to complete and secrets to find it its maps. I haven’t gotten 100 % completion yet, but its one of those games where I want to do so. It’s a new entry on my list because I played it for the first time this year, and I’m also pretty excited to eventually get my hands on Eternal and see how they took things to the next level with that.
