The first film's story was deliberately simple and 'derivative'. They had a message they wanted to convey and the colonizer/savage romance (not actually savages, but that's what the trope's called) is a well-worn story type inspired by actual human history. It did what it was trying to do well, and the focus was the living world, not the clever or original writing.
