Last I checked the general exception is for things to overall improve over time with the pandemic since if I remember right a variant popping up that resists vaccines to the extent things are set back to square one is considered an unlikely scenario. The first half of 2022 could be rough with omicron spreading everywhere though.

Even if things were to mostly be back to normal worldwide by holiday 2022, that's more than enough time into a new gen to shift momentum. It's not that much different to get an XB, even an XBSS if you just can't get your hands on a PS5. Some will wait, some won't. Some will stick with the XB, some will trade to PS5 when it's easy to do so. Some will take a shot on a Switch, or even a Steam Deck.

If the pandemic by chance continues as is or get's worse, nothing really changes for anyone, other than high(er) demand and low(er) supply.

Yeah I do think the PS5 will be harmed by this in the long term since selling say an extra 3 million in 2023 due to pent up demand won't make up for losing say 6 million due to people giving up. I'm glad I have no interest in buying a PS5 or Series X and that my PC is capable enough to last another 2-3 years.
