Switch is the successor to both the 3DS and Wii U; the unification of the previously separate home console and handheld lines.

As for 3DS continuing on after Switch came out, SNES kept getting games after N64 came out, and PS2 sold and got games for years after its replacement. Heck, even the DS got Pokémon Black and White 2 after the launch of the 3DS. PS3/360 overlapped with PS4/Xbone for two whole years.
