Basically. Zelda 2 is the game you just described, only minus different equipment. It had HP, MP, and experience points. Its a stellar game.
Its also the most hated game of the series. It was my favorite until TP. TP is now my favorite, as I was very disappointed with OoT and TP does everything OoT tried to do, only better.

Wii: 14 million by January I sold myself short
