Just Finished: Bayonetta 2 (Switch)

Well, this certainly was more Bayonetta. More of an iterative sequel than one that makes any meaningful steps forward for the franchise or genre. The combat is as stylish and fast paced as ever. My biggest issue is that it felt too familiar to the original game and lacked the sense of surprise that made the first so enjoyable. The story follows a similar template as the first with Bayonetta chaperoning a little kid through a series of battles with angels and demons. I played with the dual sword weapons this time, still find it more enjoyable than using her pistols. Not much of a graphical leap between games either because it was made for the Wii U. On normal difficulty I had a much easier time clearing this game than the first, probably because I was already used to the combat system. This is a button masher, no way of getting around it. I still don't find Bayonetta sexy which makes all the suggestive poses she's put in funny at best or cringe at worst. The game is also really short, levels and environments feel smaller than in the original. I have not tried the co-op but I'm sure it works well. I had fun but I was not blown away like I expected given the acclaim this game has received. The package that includes both Bayonetta games for one price is a great deal on both Wii U and Switch. Individually Bayonetta 2 is enjoyable but it can't reach the highs of the first climax.

7/10
