Just Finished: Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix HD (PS4) (As Part of the Kingdom Hearts All-In-One Package)

Slowly but surely making my way through the collection. Kingdom Hearts II is a great sequel to the original game. It adds some cool new worlds while bringing back some memorable old ones. The combat is a lot flashier but more forgiving than its predecessor. The presentation is phenomenal and is definitely the game's strong suit, the art style,the Disney integration, it is all so ambitious for what was originally a PS2 game. Some parts are a drag like The Little Mermaid and Winnie the Pooh sections. The 3 hour Roxas prologue is also boring and takes too long. The story is still a mess. I watched all of the cutscenes up until the final world, when I just decided to skip them. Some design choices are questionable, like the way Sora has to grind in order to learn dodge roll, such a basic yet effective ability. Steamboat Willie is still my favorite level in this game as the art style is so well done. The gummi ship sections are still not fun. The game is undoubtedly a button masher, but an enjoyable one. The music is great too. The game overuses QTEs even though they can lead to some epic moments. The RPG elements are rather lite, which suits me fine as I ease my way into the genre. Time for a nice break before my next KH game.
