I think its unlikely it was just made up and snowballed, OLED doesn't equate to better specs and the rumours were actually quite specific and lots of reputable sources touched on it. Eurogamer had their own sources which makes me imagine it was something happening/being prototyped behind the scenes but plans changed. At one point MS was playing with giving Xbox One X a new CPU but it was too expensive.

I agree though, its on us if we believe rumours will be 100% accurate. Even if they are true at the time of reporting it doesn't mean the company isn't floating various options at that point or that the info isn't outdated.

You instead choose to believe Nintendo decided to just sit on a model with upgraded internal chipset and releases an OLED model without that? Because you believe the rumours?

It might be possible that Nintendo considered a 4K option and chose not to go that way, but some rumours included apparently production of a new model and combined that with 4K. So no, Nintendo hasn't produced 4K units and holds them now back out of spite. So the rumours were wrong.

Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser in an interview with The Washington Post was asked about the Nintendo Switch Pro rumors and said the company is always looking at the latest technology and how it can improve gameplay.

"We are always looking at technology and how technology can enhance gameplay experiences," said Bowser. "It’s not technology for technology’s sake."

"It’s how specifically can technology enhance a gameplay experience," he continued. "And then where do you apply that technology? Do you want to apply it on current existing hardware or platforms, or do you want to wait for the next platform? And then what’s the right gameplay experience with that? There’s a host of factors that goes into it, and it’s something we’re always looking at."

Not even a month ago for this article and quotes. And it's like people either didn't read it, or just chose to see what they wanted to see. 'If Xbox and Sony have 4k, then everything must be about 4k, so it's innevitable Nintendo will do 4k sooner than later'.
