Unfortunately, the foster care system is already overburdened without adding about 20,000 additional children from DHS custody, so it doesn't serve as a strong solution to the issue at hand. The system just isn't really flexible enough to handle this type of surge, and it is made even more difficult when you have to consider the unique needs of many of these children who may not be able to speak english.
The argument that I have routinely made when having this discussion is that we are in a situation where there is no good answer, but I believe the Biden administration is going down the best available road with the tools that are available. We simply didn't have the infrastructure in place when Biden came into office, and rapid gains have been made on that front. The amount of children and the time spent in CBP custody have rapidly decreased, and the amount of children placed with sponsors per day has rapidly increased causing that timeline to be cut in about half.
We can acknowledge that significant improvements on this front are still required, but we should also acknowledge that huge improvements are being made. We need a bigger immigration solution though, than just changes made by the Biden administration. We need congressional action.
