Been doing a fair bit of binge-watching lately.
Recently finished:
-13 Reasons Why-- the first season was surprisingly interesting, though I ultimately didn't agree with the end message and ethics of it. The seasons after are a complete waste of time. The only reason I may finally watch season 4, is so I can watch along with the Adum & Pals/YourMovieSucks commentary (the reason I gave the show a watch in the first place); it's about the only thing that makes it bearable at this point.
-Dark-- excellent time-travel series. Mixes hard sci-fi, drama and some philosophy without having to compromise in any area. Takes complex themes and concepts but makes them easy to digest by slowly feeding them throughout episodes, without having to rely on heavy sequences of exposition or other lazy techniques. If you like this and haven't seen Steins;Gate, I'd recommend that too.
-The OA(season one)-- unlike 13 Reasons Why, this taught me the perfect techinque for stopping school shooters. Second season apparently does a better job of answering many of the unanswered plot points, but if nothing else, I enjoyed Lucius Malfoy's performance.
-Alice in Boderlands(Netflix live-action)-- gave it a shot after someone here mentioned it. Pretty much your average live-action adaption of a popular manga-- bad special effects, lots of melodrama, overly pathetic protagonist. I'm sure the manga is much better, but even if it had an official translated release I wouldn't be bothered after this.
-The Boys-- it's nice to see some fresh takes on the superhero genre. This is probably the most fun I've had with a series in a while. A more realistic portrayal of superheroes in a modern America, featuring a lot of dark comedy but not too much cynicism. Nice to see two Kiwis playing such prominent roles and doing a great job. Hope it doesn't get too political with future seasons.
-Invincible-- fresh take on the superhero genre but also animated. Animation was generally great and hope they can get a bigger budget after the success it's had. Loved pretty much all the voice acting and music choices.
-Jupiter Rising-- ill-timed superhero series that moved too slowly, had terrible choreography and most of the actors seemed to be phoning it in. Lots of good ideas but not great results. Hope they can execute better in the future.
-Superman & Lois-- paused after 5 episodes and should resume soon. Shockingly good for a CW show, especially the special effects. A classic version of Superman has to face his most difficult challenge yet-- teenage boys.
Currently watching:
-Dragon Ball-- been watching on and off for about a year, roughly half way now. Aged like a fine wine. Animation is still great and the comedy is still entertaining. Haven't decided if I'll continue on to Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Kai afterwards, but I do want to get to Dragon Ball Super eventually as I've yet to watch that at all.
-Re:ZERO(Director's Cut)-- given it's popularity I knew about this series several years ago but I only first watched it last year. Surprisingly good. Like a lot of fandoms (especially with anime), it's reputation is ruined by toxic shipping wars making it hard to get good feedback. Now that season 2 is fully released, I can move on to binging that afterwards.
