With Switch Lite we see that there is no huge demand for a handheld only device. I think a true 3DS successor would have sold not more than 40 - 50M.
The hybrid idea and releasing all big Nintendo games on one device sold the system. Many longtime series have their best game released on Switch. Nintendo also tried everything with Switch to pull 3rd party and indie support on the system, right from the start.
