Just Finished: New Super Mario Bros. 2 (3DS)

Starting off this year much the same way I started last year, with a 2D Mario game. It is also the first 3DS game I have played in a while. I played the game in short 1 level / day bursts. It was a relaxing way to spend 5 - 10 minutes, which is perhaps the highest praise I can give it. NSMB 2 is definitely the least remarkable of the four NSMB games and probably the easiest. In some ways it is hardly different from NSMB U- both released the same year- except the U featured longer levels and was noticeably more difficult. The 3D effect is as prominent as you would expect for a 2D game, which is to say not at all. There was a huge missed opportunity not to use the Z axis to have objects and obstacles approach the screen. The emphasis on coin collecting is a rather shallow gimmick, especially as their is no story reason given for having to collect 1 million coins. The level design is breezy and straightforward but also forgettable. Nothing about the game is offensively offputting but it is so bland, it is the videogame equivalent of pablum.

7/10
