Lol is PS4 about to over take the PS5? I'd argue that there was no point sony launching in Japan this year but I guess to intentionally skip would do more damage to the brand than being understocked.

PS3 had weeks where it sold better than the PS4:

The way Sony has gone about the PS5 launch, there was no point in doing it last year. What they have done is worse than a delayed launch, because with a delayed launch they would have had at least a good reason for their low LTD in spring 2021. But launching before the holiday season and then not being able to properly take advantage of the holiday season paints an incredibly grim picture. When launch and holiday season can't even combine for 400k LTD, plus having an outlook of a slump that will last until the next holiday season, that's a terrible spot to be in.

The PS4 was at least only seven months away from the holiday season when it hit the low that I posted above. But the PS5 will be in the gutter for eleven months.

If the PS5 doesn't recover quickly (like the PS4 did during and after it's first holiday season), then I think we can compare the console with the Wii U in Japan. For those who don't know, the Wii U early on sold better than the PS4 in Japan, but Sony managed to turn the tables around after a year.
