American Schooling starts with grade K as in Kindergarten and then grades 1-12. 8th grade is middle school. Sophmore depending on the school is either the first or second year of high school. Some high schools do 9-12 and some 10-12. 9th grade typically considered a Freshman. 10th is Sophmore. 11th is Jr. 12th is Senior.

Elementary School is typically grades k-6. Middle School is Grades 7-8 and sometimes 9. High School can be 9-12 or 10-12. Public school system.
