"You can't wake up one day and say, 'Let me build a game studio,'" Nadella said in an interview after the company announced its $7.5 billion cash purchase of ZeniMax Media, which owns several industry-leading game developers, including Bethesda Softworks and Id Software. "The idea of having content is so we can reach larger communities."

That's why Microsoft will consider buying even more video game companies in the future, he said, and why it continues to invest in its Xbox Game Pass subscription service.

Good going Sony. You've awakened the bear.

First of all, in regards to what Satya said about waking up and building a new studio about.... Yes, yes you can, actually. Especially if you have lots of money. Isnt that how they  have developed a few of their studios?

But while that comment is a bit silly, the decision to buy Bethesda was fairly smart. And it will be interesting to see where MS go from here. Considering the eye-watering sum they paid for Bethesda, I wouldnt have thought they would be wanting to buy any further studios anytime soon (despite still having tons of cash), and my guess is they will take time so consolidate the Bethesda studios. But who knows.

On a separate note, I find the smugness of some of the comments here (and elsewhere on the site) hilarious. All MS did was throw in the towel and admit that they would be unable to compete on a level playing field. Having said that, this is a completely valid tactic for them to take, and a smart one.
