It was cancelled because Fox was evil. They screwed it over from the get go. Instead of the pilot, they initially aired the second episode, and then preceded to air the episodes out of sequence, often delaying them for sporting or other events. The actual pilot was broken in to two parts and aired last. The poor show never had a chance. But it's still one of the greatest shows ever made.
