Stock and fanbase loyalty are great arguments.

We just need to keep in mind that certain fans can convince themselves to hold their buying if they truly believe it's not worth buying it day one. I have a friend, huge xbox fan, that said that will not buy day one. He sees no point at the moment. A bad release strategy can make even loyal fans hold it, particularly in the case of microsoft with this "no generations any more" argument.

I think halo is one example. Halo fans were over the moon until they saw the graphics and delay. I wouldn't be surprised if microsoft had already lost significant loyal sales because of that.

Wii U is another remote example. They couldn't convince even most of its own incredibly loyal Japanese fanbase to jump into it. (of course, Wii U is kinda too gross as an example, but it counts)

Sony is not immune to that either. A bad price can change fan's minds a lot.

God bless You.
