I was just thinking, "beating the NES lifetime sales is a decent milestone, but those where different times. NES had 90% marketshare in the US one year. Any system that could beat that would be extremely impessive." Then I realized Switch might actually do this in Japan this year. We'll just have to wait and see until the end of the year. It depends on how many people in Japan want a PS5.

PS1 and PS2 were big in Japan. PS3 only sold 10.47 million there, far less than the PS1 and PS2. PS4 is only at 9.2 million. PS5 will be lucky to get 10 million in Japan. I honestly don't think the PaS5 will sell more in a year with Switch as a competitor in Japan until 2022.

Nes is a behemoth, rebuild US Market from scratch. And first, build the Japanese  console market. If you counter population growth, NES sells gangbuster ins US. Aligned with the best sellers in US. But, Nintendo focuses only on two countries, the other countries are minors sales for the console.
