I think the closest I've come to the thread topic myself was when I dated a girl from mainland China. I just made a point of never bringing up politics with her as I sensed it could be something of a minefield given the vast differences between our countries.

You're highlighting the actual problem right there. Homophobia and racism have absolutely nothing to do with politics. Neither have civil rights or healthcare. The US is one of the only countries in the world that makes those things seem political because one party supports crimes against humanity while the other doesn't. If you talk about extremism and socipathy then you're no longer talking about politics, which makes your question moot.

Civil rights and healthcare shouldn't be political, but sadly the reality is that one's stance on them is often determined by one's political position.
