Yeah probably still into the mid/late-90s, "Nintendo" was used as a generic term for every video game by a lot of parents. Playstation did eventually break that. 

From what European forum users say here saying Playstation to mean any gaming system is the default over there, perhaps in USA older people say Nintendo. In Brazil though I only remember people using videogame for generic.
