Switch has three killer apps on it now: Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8, and Animal Crossing New Horizons.

Smash Brothers and Pokemon are gigantic games, but I don't think they're killer apps; while they're must have games for millions of people, those millions of people are previous fans of the games. With Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 DX, and Animal Crossing, they're getting millions of new customers who would have otherwise not considered buying Nintendo hardware. I have co-worker in his 60s who hadn't played video games since the 1980s (outside of mobile) who bought a Switch for Breath of the Wild and Mario Kart - he has put over 140 hours into Zelda and regularly (until lockdown) played Mario Kart with the group at lunch. Mario Kart has attracted A LOT of people who would otherwise not be much into console games outside of Fifa.

Now everyone is getting/gotten Animal Crossing New Horizons, and even more people are buying it across all age groups. The game seems to be very popular among older women with decades of professional experience in everything from design to economics to the arts. TONS of celebrities playing (Elijah Wood is actively going to random people's islands with high turnip prices). There hasn't been anything even remotely like this since the Wii era.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.
